Blackwork first appeared in England during the reign of Henry VIII. I do like the symmetry and 'simplicity' of this type of embroidery. Once you have worked out how to do a part of the pattern, you can more easily complete the whole design. Of course, this is intended to lead to an exhibition of miniature blackwork pieces.
