The fleet, the biggest ever assembled in the southern hemisphere, left Albany on 1st November 1914. Highlighted is a memorial to all those who didn't see Australia again. I guess war memorials to 'common' soldiers are seen in all commonwealth countries. Australia has its share. Heroic actions which emerged from the battles at Gallipoli and beyond inspired another pivotal moment at the site. In 1923, Reverend Arthur Ernest White led a party of friends to a humble ceremony at dawn, where, as the sun rose he uttered the words “As the sun rises and goes down, we will remember them”.
